Concert Synopsis:
With this concert, we will travel from the musical light of Catalonia to northern Germany, passing through Austria. We will do so through three exquisite works that reveal moments of great joy and optimism from their respective composers — Eduard Toldrà, Wolfgang A. Mozart, and Johannes Brahms — who will grace us with their most insightful and luminous compositions. Our journey will be guided by Maestro Jordi Mora, accompanied by the Orquestra Simfònica Segle XXI and two exceptional soloists from Sabadell: Pol Abellán (flute) and Laura Marquino (harp). Let us prepare to experience a delight for both the senses and the soul.
Orquestra Simfònica Segle XXI:
The Orquestra Simfònica Segle XXI is a non-profit association whose core activity is the organization of an international orchestra course. This course brings together highly skilled musicians of all ages with the goal of working on orchestral repertoire through a rigorous pedagogical approach focused on understanding the work and the composer.

The orchestra was founded in 1999. The first course was organized with the idea that makes it unique: to perform the great symphonic cycles in chronological order. Since then, these orchestral meetings have been held one or two times a year in various locations across Catalonia and the Valencian Community, as well as once in Extremadura. One of the earliest challenges was to perform the complete Beethoven symphonies, culminating with the Ninth Symphony in 2019, coinciding with the orchestra’s 20th anniversary. The orchestra has also tackled major composers such as Brahms, Schumann, Schubert, and Bruckner.

The orchestra meets intensively for one to two weeks, depending on the production, usually in July. Additionally, the organization also runs an international course in musical interpretation for chamber groups and soloists in Sabadell.

The OSSXXI has accompanied renowned soloists both nationally and internationally and has given many young musicians in the country the opportunity to perform great works as soloists, creating an ideal space for dedication and a genuine love of music. One of the orchestra’s main features is that it has no fixed roster, but is renewed at each meeting.

Jordi Mora
Born in Barcelona, he completed his initial musical studies in piano and viola at the Conservatorio Superior de Música of the same city. In Germany, he graduated from the Hochschule.
für Musik in Würzburg as an oboist and, awarded a scholarship by the State of Bavaria, he earned degrees in Musicology and Philosophy at the University of Munich. He studied orchestral conducting mainly with Sergiu Celibidache.

He has carried out extensive pedagogical work, especially in Switzerland (Fondation Résonnance), Argentina (Fundación Cultural), and Mons (Belgium). Since 2003, he has been a professor of orchestral conducting at the ESMUC, and in 2010 he was appointed visiting professor at the Grieg-Akademie in Bergen, Norway.

He has served as principal conductor of the National Orchestra of Greece and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès. In 2014, he was named principal guest conductor of the Camera Musicae Orchestra (OCM). He has recently conducted the Simon Bolívar Orchestra of Caracas as well as various orchestras within the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System. Currently, he is the conductor of the Orquestra Simfònica Segle XXI and the Bruckner Akademie Orchester. Since 2013, he has been the principal guest conductor of the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he is performing the symphonies of Shostakovich.

Pol Abellán
He was born in 1992 and began his musical studies at the age of seven in Sabadell. During this initial stage, he took lessons from renowned flutists such as Isabel Souto, Christian Farroni, and Mirjam Plas. In 2010, he began his higher studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen with Aldo Baerten, and was later admitted to the specialized master’s program as a soloist. At the same time, he trained as a piccolo player with Lieve Goossens and Anke Lauwers.
Once he completed his training, he launched a personal project by founding the Trio Nuages (harp, viola, and flute) with the aim of deepening his chamber music practice, receiving masterclasses from Jordi Mora.

He made his solo debut with the Orquestra de Cambra de Sabadell (OCS) in 2012 and began collaborating with European orchestral ensembles such as the Kamerorkest van Vlaanderen (Belgium) and the Bayerische Philharmonie (Germany). He has also worked with orchestras at the national level, including the Franz Schubert Filharmonia, Orquestra de Cambra Terrassa 48, Orquestra Simfònica Victoria de los Ángeles (OSVA), and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès (OSV), with whom he has regularly collaborated since 2015, performing at various festivals such as the Festival de Peralada, Festival Porta Ferrada, and Saaremaa Opera Festival.

He has received masterclasses from renowned flutists such as Peter-Lukas Graf, Peter Lloyd, Paul Edmund-Davies, Renate Greiss-Armin, Patricia Morris, Jean-Michel Tanguy, Eva Amsler, Katherine Hoover, and Kate Hill, among others.

He has also developed a pedagogical side, teaching at various music schools and conservatories, engaging both in management roles and teaching flute and chamber music. Currently, he balances this pedagogical role with his full orchestral activity.

Laura Marquino
Laura has established herself as an international freelance harpist, frequently performing with orchestras in London and as Second Guest Harpist with the Orquestra del Gran Teatre del Liceu. In addition to being a highly sought-after performer of solo, symphonic, and operatic repertoire throughout the United Kingdom, she has performed with the Quwwali Orchestral Project at the Tanweer Music Festival in Dubai and with the Sinfónica Verum in a performance alongside the Víctor Ullate Ballet in Spain. She is one of only three harpists to have performed Caroline Lizotte’s Stellar Sonata for electroacoustic and electronic harp.
She began her professional studies at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón. Later, she moved to London to complete a second degree at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance with Gabriella Dall’Olio and Frances Kelly, where she also earned a master’s degree. She was awarded the John Marson Prize for Harp and participated in a recording of previously unpublished chamber music works by the composer, focused on harp and other instruments.

In addition to classical repertoire, Laura has a strong passion for creating electronic music using electroacoustic harp and sound processing. She has arranged her own versions of popular music for electric harp with live looping. She shows a keen interest in contemporary performance practices and interdisciplinary collaborations and is the resident harpist for improvised music sessions combined with poetry alongside a collective of poets from the United Kingdom. She has performed with artists such as Fabio & Grooverider, Chiara Dubey, and Livia Rita, and continues to collaborate with numerous independent artists worldwide.

Besides her work as a performer, Laura is also a harp pedagogue. She toured with the Hurley Burly Theatre in an operatic production for babies. She maintains a private teaching studio and has been a Visiting Professor of electroacoustic harp at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
